Dell formalises name change

Dell has formalised its change of company name - dropping 'Computer' from the title.

At an annual shareholders' meeting, the decision to move to simply Dell Inc. has been approved.

The change was first signalled back in May - Dell bids to change its name - and is intended to represent the growth of the Texan company from its original PC box-building days. According to the Dell board, the change 'represents Dell's evolution from strictly a computer hardware company to a diverse supplier of technology products and services'.

In an official filing to the American Securities and Exchange Commission, the board recommended shareholders to approve the name change. 'While Dell began as a supplier of personal computers,' reads the official proposal, 'our capabilities now reach deeply into the enterprise and we are a leading seller of servers, storage systems and other technology products and services. Therefore, the Board of Directors believes that 'Dell Computer Corporation' is no longer reflective of Dell's business as it exists today.'

As well as enterprise-scale server systems, Dell is also in the services, networking and storage business. Most recently, it has entered the printer market.
