This 'open data' concept goes beyond just massive, collaboratively developed databases. As users have more and more digital data, including not only office data (the real heartland of Microsoft's monopoly, perhaps even more so than Windows) but also music, photos, and videos, will application developers use proprietary data formats to lock users in, or will users have data that is portable from application to application? These are critical issues for the open source community - and in fact all computer users - to think about.
