According to leaks of AMD's release schedule the Athlon64 processor will be launched 22 September, when the Athlon64-M mobile processor will also be appearing.

AMD has already entered the world of 64-bit computing with its Opteron server processor, the industry's first 64-bit, x86 architecture. The Athlon64, however, will bring AMD's eighth-generation processor core to the desktop arena.

Earlier indications, from motherboard makers, were that the Athlon64 could be appearing earlier than scheduled, in August.

The latest leak follows another last week. This indicated a new version of the Opteron - the Opteron 246 - would be appearing 4 August.

All will be officially revealed, no doubt, in AMD's own good time.
