Amid a host of other releases - Premiere Pro and AfterEffects 6.0 - Adobe has announced a new version of its audio editing and mixing software.

Formerly known as Cool Edit Pro 2.1, Adobe Audition is a professional-level audio tool. As well as real-time audio effects and analysis tools, it features, royalty-free music loops, restoration features and video support. It allows users to edit individual audio files, create loops, import more than 45 DSP effects, and mix up to 128 tracks.

For Windows only, it runs on XP, 2000 and 98. The software was formerly known as Cool Edit Pro 2.1 and was acquired from Syntrillium Software in May 2003.

'The introduction of Adobe Audition into our Digital Video product family is an important step in providing a complete, high-performance workflow for video professionals,' said Bryan Lamkin, senior VP of Digital Imaging and Video Products at Adobe. 'Going forward, Adobe Audition will continue to provide the advanced editing capabilities professional audio editors and musicians expect, while delivering close integration with the entire Adobe digital video product line.'

Adobe is effectively filling a Windows gap in the market. With Apple having acquired emagic and turned its formerly cross-platform Logic product into a Mac-only offering, this has left an opportunity for Adobe.

Adobe Audition is available as a standalone product or as part of the Adobe Video Collection. It will be shipping at the beginning of August, with an RRP of £199.
