Java gets into the Swing of Windows XP

Sun has updated its platform-neutral Java system, with the release of Java 2 Standard Edition v1.4.2 (J2SE).

As well as numerous bug-fixes, improvements have been made to the Java runtime performance. J2SE 1.4.2 also has improved Swing, which is Java's second-generation graphics toolkit. It is now capable of supporting the Windows XP and GTK+ look and feel.

There is also a Java Update facility that automatically delivers J2RE updates to Windows end users. So maybe for the last time, you can manually can download it from java.sun.com/j2se/download.html . The runtime environment weighs in at 1.4MB and the SDK is 339KB.

The Standard Edition is the mainstream, vanilla implementation of Java - there are also Micro and Enterprise Editions.
