iTronix has announced it will be selling a sub-£2,000 Tablet PC that can withstand extremes of temperature and take a few knocks.

From September, the GoBook Tablet PC will be available in the UK for £1,935 inc VAT and has been built with the outdoor life in mind. It can withstand temperatures of between -20o and 60oC in use and has been tested for ruggedness with 26 consecutive drops of three feet onto plywood over concrete. It is also tested against rainwater blown at 40psi as well as further tests for resistance to dust and tolerance to vibration.

The components are protected in die-cast magnesium and all the IO ports are also sealed. Wireless options mean you can still get connected via WLAN (802.11b), Bluetooth and across GPRS (or CDMA) wireless networks.

The tablet's construction and relatively small screen size (8.4in) keeps the weight down to 1.7kg. Powering the workhorse is an 866MHz ultra-low voltage mobile PIII for long battery life, plus 30GB of storage and up to 640MB of low-voltage SDRAM.

Wired connectivity is in the form of a V.92 modem and 10/100Mbit Base-T LAN. External storage can be added through Compact Flash cards, PC Cards and USB 2.0 devices.

The OS comes courtesy of Windows XP Tablet Edition.
