Intel and Sun have declared their intention to collaborate over the use of Java on Intel XScale-based mobile devices. The stated aim is to enable a wider range of 'rich' multimedia application on small-scale devices, such as phones and PDAs.

The announcement is one of the first to emerge from the JavaONE event in San Francisco.

Specifically, Sun will optimise its Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) HotSpot Implementation for XScale processors. The optimised virtual machines (VM) should simplify the use of Java software and improve its performance for handset manufacturers.

'Bringing together Intel's XScale technology and Sun's CLDC HotSpot Implementation will enable a new wave of mobile applications and innovation within the mobile device segment,' said Hans Geyer, general manager of the Intel PCA Components Group. 'The popularity and prevalence of the Java platform coupled with the high-performance of Intel XScale technology based processors is a powerful combination that will allow mobile application developers to create a compelling array of exciting applications now and in the future.'

'Java's momentum in the mobile device market is creating new opportunities for device manufacturers, applications developers and wireless operators,' added the VP of Sun Microsystems Consumer and Mobile Systems Group, Alan Brenner.

Intel and Sun anticipate that OEM handsets incorporating the optimisations will be available before the end of they year.
