Intel has cut prices for its Celeron range of processors, which is targeted at budget systems.

The top of the range 2.4GHz Celeron drops from $103 to $84, a fall of 18 per cent. The 2.3 and 2.2GHz models are both cut by 11 per cent, to $79 and $74 respectively. And finally, the low-end 2.1GHz Celeron now costs $74, a drop of 6 per cent.

Following this adjustment, all Celerons are now priced below $100.

We can also expect - according to motherboard sources - further price reductions from Intel. The chip giant is scheduled to cut the cost of the Centrino Pentium-M processors this weekend.

In a bid to move the redesigned mobile processor towards the mainstream, cuts of up to 30 per cent are anticipated. The 1.5 and 1.6GHz processors will be slashed to $294 and $423, respectively. A new 1.7GHz Pentium-M may also be introduced.

Note that all pricing is based on OEM-style orders of 1,000 unit quantities.
