WLAN Event: US Robotics introduces 802.11g Wireless Turbo range

Faster and more secure wireless networking is the boast of US Robotics and its new 802.11g Wireless Turbo range.

'The advantage of the Wireless Turbo product line is our exclusive Accelerator Technology, which provides 54Mbit/sec accelerated to 100Mbit/sec performance,' said Tony Field, a US Robotics Product Marketing Manager. Note, however, that these figures represent theoretical maximums - in practice the speeds will be considerably less.

The devices in the range are designed to be compatible with 11Mbit/sec 802.11 devices, but as wireless networking can be a black art caution should taken when mixing different manufacturer's devices.

In terms of security, the Turbo products feature 256-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption and 802.1x MAC address authentication. They will also support the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption once the 802.11i security standard is ratified. Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall 2003 is also bundled

The full Turbo range comprises the USR808054 access point and router, the USR805450 multi-function access point, the USR805416 PCI adapter and the USR805410 PC Card. They will be available in the shops in July, costing £99, £119, £59 and £59 respectively.
