Intel's Springdale chipset springs into life

As we anticipated yesterday, Intel has now officially unveiled its Springdale chipsets (865G and 865PE). And there are new Pentium 4 chips, too.

Supporting hyper-threading and a 800MHz system bus, Intel claims the increased processing throughput will improve user experience of multimedia computing. Advanced processor technology at 'mainstream price points' is Intel's assertion.

Check out our detailed report from the recent Intel Developer Forum, Spring 2003 where Springdale was first publicly demoed.

New Pentium 4 processors, running at 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8GHz, also incorporate an 800MHz system bus and feature hyper-threading technology. This enables the processor to more efficiently process applications by splitting them into separate tasks.

The benefits of such hyper threading, Intel claims, will be seen by existing applications as well as programs explicitly written to take advantage of the new feature.

The Intel 865P chipset has also been launched today. This provides the Springdale features but it supports 400 and 533MHz system buses.
