Dell bids to change its name

Dell is bidding to change its name, from Dell Computer to simply 'Dell Inc'. The move is intended to represent the growth of the Texan company from its original PC box-building days.

As well as enterprise-scale server systems, Dell is also in the services, networking and storage business. Most recently, it has entered the printer market

In an official filing to the American Securities and Exchange Commission, the board recommends shareholders to approve the name change. The board believes Dell Inc. 'represents Dell's evolution from strictly a computer hardware company to a diverse supplier of technology products and services'.

'While Dell began as a supplier of personal computers,' reads the official proposal, 'our capabilities now reach deeply into the enterprise and we are a leading seller of servers, storage systems and other technology products and services. Therefore, the Board of Directors believes that 'Dell Computer Corporation' is no longer reflective of Dell's business as it exists today.'

A majority of shareholders will have to approve the change.
