Along with the launch of the Opteron 64-bit processor AMD has rejigged its processor pricing.

The desktop Athlon XP range has seen the largest price cuts, but mobile processors and the MP server offerings are also reduced.

Leading the way is a 44 per cent cut for the top-of-the-range Athlon XP 3000+, down from $588 to $325. The 2800+, 2700+ and 2600+ also see cuts of 40 per cent, 32 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively.

As part of the pricing overhaul, a 2500+ model has been added to the XP product line. Models below the 2500+ see price cuts around the 20 per cent mark.

Cuts have also been made for notebook processors. At the desktop-replacement end of the market - the Athlon XP-M - there have been cuts of 36, 26 and 23 per cent for the Athlon XP-M 2600+, 2400+, 2200+.

Meanwhile, the 'mainstream Athlon XP-M' (formerly known as the mobile Athlon 4) sees cuts of up to 27 per cent. This headline figure relates to the 2500+, which has been reduced from $184 to $134. The 2400+ and 2200+ also see reductions of 25 per cent and 22 per cent, respectively.

The recently introduced low-voltage Athlon XP-M processors are also reduced, by approximately 20 per cent. The 1600+ leads the way with a cut of 25 per cent, from $107 to $80. The top-of-the-range 1800+ also falls by more than 23 per cent, from $147 to $112.

To complete the picture, the Athlon MP - AMD's multi-processor server offering - sees cuts of around 20 per cent. The Athlon MP 2600+ sees a 26 per cent fall, from $273 to $201.

All pricing is based on 1,000 unit quantities.
