Heathrow welcomes Wi-Fi hotspot

A public access Wi-Fi hotspot has been unveiled at Heathrow airport.

Operated by BT OpenZone, the Heathrow hotspot is located in Terminal 1. All public areas within the terminal building are supposed to be within the range of the network.

Intel has certified it as being compatible with Centrino, its new mobile processor technology, which has built-in support for wireless networking.

Pre-pay vouchers - which can be purchased from the likes of Dixons in the terminal concourse - are available for one hour's access (£6) or unlimited access within a 24-hour period (£15).

Subscriptions to OpenZone are priced according to monthly access. BT OpenZone 300 costs £20 per month for 300 minutes of access, with additional minutes costing 15p. OpenZone 900 costs £40 per month for 900 minutes of access, with additional minutes costing 10p. There is also an Unlimited subscription, which costs £85 per month.

The network at Heathrow is sure to prove popular with the thousands of business people who pass through each day, further improving the take-up of wireless networking.

Hot spots at Stansted and Aberdeen airports have also been rolled out by the British Airports Authority (BAA). Earlier this year, BAA announced a Wi-Fi hotspot for Gatwick airport.
