While the likes of Roxio supply basic DVD software, Encore will be aimed at the professional user. It is designed to produce interactive menus, multiple audio tracks and subtitles and will be integrated with Photoshop and other Adobe applications.

'Adobe Encore DVD opens the door for video professionals to take advantage of powerful DVD features and deliver their video projects in the format embraced by both consumers and professionals,' said Adobe's Bryan Lamkin, senior VP of Digital Imaging and Video Products. 'By integrating Adobe Encore DVD with applications critical to the authoring process - Photoshop, Adobe Premiere and After Effects - we have created a superior DVD authoring environment that will enable our customers to take their work to the next level.'

Adobe Encore covers the range of DVD formats, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-RAM.

With integrated video and audio transcoding, Encore can automatically convert video source files to MPEG-2 and audio source files to Dolby Digital.

Don't hold your breath, however, for the software. Adobe Encore DVD for Windows XP is not expected to ship before the summer. No information on UK pricing is currently available, but the ESP will be $549 in the States.
