The latest retail Linux distribution from Red Hat is launched today.

Version 9.0 of Red Hat's Linux distro features an updated graphical installation process and various usability enhancements.

Specifically, version 9 includes NPTL (Native POSIX Thread Library) threading technology, drag-and-drop printing capabilities, extended support for ATi and Nvidia hardware, the OpenOffice.org office suite and the Mozilla Web browser and Ximian Evolution calendar and contract management system.

The system is based around the Linux kernel 2.4.20, GCC 3.2.1 and version 2.0 of the Apache Web server.

'In Red Hat Linux 9, we've refined the installation and interface, adding new tools and applications for end users,' states Brian Stevens, VP of Operating Systems Development at Red Hat. 'The result is an open source desktop operating system that is flexible and simple to use for mainstream technology enthusiasts.'

While binaries and source code are now available to Red Hat Network subscribers, Red Hat Linux 9 will be fully available from 7 April.

Red Hat Linux 9 has a MSRP of £29.78, and includes 30 days of Red Hat Network Basic Service and Web-based support. Red Hat Linux 9 Professional has an MSRP of £110.63, and includes the operating system on DVD, a SysAdmin Rescue Tool, an office and multimedia applications CD, and 60 days of Red Hat support.

Red Hat is racing through the version numbers. It was only at the beginning of last October that Red Hat Linux 8.0 was released - Usability the watchword for Red Hat's new Linux.
