Chip giant Intel has introduced three new processors for PDAs. The new chips are said to offer better performance and longer battery life in a smaller package. The announcement includes two new versions of the PXA26x series and a replacement for the PXA250
The PXA263 processor is Intel's first 'stacked' processor for PDAs and brings memory and processor chips together in a smaller package. The Xscale based PXA263 processor, available in 200MHz, 300MHz, 400MHz versions, stacks 32MB of 32-bit Flash memory for up to 72 per cent space savings in any device and should offer better performance.
The Intel PXA260 die is said to be almost 53 per cent smaller at 13x13x1.4mm than previous versions. It is 'pin-compatible' with other members of the PXA26x processor family. The PXA260 will also be available in 200MHz, 300MHz, 400MHz versions and offers an upgrade path for OEMs looking to update existing models.
The new PXA255 processor is said to offer better performance and power consumption over the previous PXA250. Intel has doubled the internal system bus speed while lowering the voltage to 1.3 volts at 400MHz. Intel says this means 30 per cent less power consumption in run mode and more than 60 per cent lower in idle mode. Intel claims to have signed up Acer, Casio, Dell, Intermec, Symbol and Toshiba to produce devices based on the new chips.
With the launch of this new generation of processors, Intel is addressing similar concerns of PDA makers that it addressed with the Pentium M processor: How to make a battery powered processor handle a whole new range of functions without compromising battery life. As PDAs have increasingly included functions like colour screens, wireless connections and bigger applications, OEMs are looking for more efficient processors to handle the load.
The Intel PXA263 and Intel PXA260 processors are expected to become generally available in Q2 2003 with products hitting the shelves later in the year. The 200MHz PXA263 processor has a suggested list price of $42.35 in 10,000 unit quantities, and the Intel 200MHz PXA260 processor will cost $22.85 in 10,000 unit quantities.
