AMD follows in Intel's footsteps, slashing desktop and mobile processor prices.

Cuts of up to 31 per cent are to be seen in the desktop Athlon XP range. For laptop processors, AMD's desktop replacement, the mobile Athlon XP, sees cuts of up to 41 per cent, and the standard mobile Athlon sees some models almost halved in price (its low-end Mobile Athlon XP 1400+).

The move follows in the wake of the Intel price cuts announced on Sunday - Intel cuts prices on Pentium 4 and Xeon.

On the desktop front, AMD has cut the price of its Athlon XP 2700+ by 23 per cent, down from $349 to $267. The 2600+ has fallen 18 per cent to $241, the 2400+ 27 per cent to $141 and the 2200+ has fallen 31 per cent to $107.

At the higher end of the Athlon XP range, the XP 2800 drops 5 per cent to $375. The XP 3000+ remains unchanged at $588. It was only released a fortnight ago - AMD boosts Athlon with Barton core.

When it comes to laptop processors, AMD distinguishes between 'desktop replacement' Mobile Athlon XP processors and 'standard' Mobile Athlon XPs (formerly known Mobile Athlon 4 processors).

The desktop replacements see cuts of 37 per cent for the 2200+ (down to $117) and the 2000+ is cut by 41 per cent (down to $92). At the lower end of the range, the 1700+ has been cut by 18 per cent (to $62) and the 1600+ by 17 per cent (to $57).

The biggest cuts, however, relate to the 'standard' Mobile XP. The models are now priced as follows. The 1900+ is $105 (down 43 per cent), the 1800+ is $98 (down 58 per cent), the 1700+ is $81 (down 44 per cent), the 1600+ is $74 (down 37 per cent) and the 1500+ is $67 (a cut of 32 per cent). Finally, the 1400+ sees the biggest cut of all, reduced by 47 per cent to $52.

To complete the picture, Athlons processor for servers and workstations, the Athlon MP processor, sees cuts of 12, 16 and 13 per cent for its 2400+, 2200+ and 2000+ offerings. These are now priced at $200, $174 and $133.

All prices are based on OEM-style orders in 1,000 unit quantities.
