The UK voice recognition specialists Domain Dynamics is working with ARM to develop biometric voice security technology. Reducing the scope for fraud and security breaches is the goal.
Domain Dynamics is to join the ARM PrimeXsys Community Program, making its Smart Voice technology available to developers for ARM devices, which include phones, PDAs and access control systems. The announcement was made at the 3GSM World Congress 2003 held in Cannes.
The voice authentication is intended to secure m-commerce transactions, providing an additional level of ID security to the traditional PIN codes.
The companies claim that the authentication operation is performed in less than half a second, quick enough to make it almost transparent to the user.
'At the 3GSM Congress this week, we will see a plethora of new 'smart' devices which will run innovative applications and hear from companies offering a wealth of innovative mobile services, but not enough attention has been paid to the security implications,' said the CEO of Domain Dynamics, Dr Fredrik Verkroost. 'Clearly this will become an important issue as we begin to use these devices for mobile commerce and more personalised services, which are natural magnets for fraud and other forms of personal information violation.'
ARM claims that 85 per cent of the world's mobile phones use ARM core-based chips.
