The gathering of the GSM great and good at Cannes - at the 3GSM World Congress 2003- is the platform for Intel and Microsoft to unveil a new mobile phone concept design. It builds the Microsoft Smartphone platform on top of Intel's Personal Internet Client Architecture.

Running on an Intel PXA262 processor, the device has a 176 x 220 colour screen and an integrated camera. With its Smartphone platform - a mobile form of Windows - there is close integration with the familiar PC apps such as Outlook. You can also browse the Web and play media files.

The hardware/software concept design is intended to serve as a reference to help manufacturers to reduce development times and costs.

Microsoft has announced that the Taiwan-based Wistron Corporation will be the first to follow the concept design. Its implementation will be available later this year.

'Today's introduction is a milestone for the cellular wireless industry,' believes Ron Smith, senior VP of the Wireless Communications and Computing Group at Intel. 'Now, with the Intel and Microsoft design, manufacturers and mobile operators around the world have access to ready-made, powerful ingredients based on Intel PCA that allow them to deliver a diverse range of innovative smart devices at a low cost.'
