AMD releases a faster version of its Athlon MP processor - the 2600+. The MP stands for multi-processor and the chip is aimed at the performance-demanding server and workstation market.
Using the AMD-760 MPX chipset, the new processor operates at a frequency of 2.1GHz. Available immediately, it is priced at $273 based on 1,000 unit quantities.
As well as intensive back-office processing, examples of use for the Athlon MP chips include such workstation favourites as CAD, multimedia content creation and scientific data analysis.
For the longer term, AMD's forthcoming Opteron processor will cover the server and workstation markets. We reported yesterday, that the 64-bit Opteron is to be launched 2 April.
You can find more info on the Athlon MP 2600+ on the AMD Web site, where details of the forthcoming Opteron can also be found.
