Adobe has finally updated two of its core Creative Suite applications with support for the MacBook Pro's Retina display - six months after the laptop launched.

Photoshop and Illustrator have received the update, which can be downloaded via Adobe Software Update or the company's downloads page.

The release notes for the 128MB Photoshop update state that the update "enables support for new HiDPI displays... for a dramatic improvement in image fidelity and resolution".

Slow going

The MacBook Pro with Retina display arrived back in June with a 2,880 x 1,800 display, and in August Adobe announced its intention to add support to its Creative Suite software. But it's proved to be a more complex fix than many were hoping.

Premiere Pro was updated with the feature in September, and the Lightroom release candidate followed in November, but Photoshop users have been waiting patiently to find out at what point in Adobe's original "autumn" target its update would arrive.

The potential of the Retina display was clear from the beginning, with Apple updating Final Cut Pro immediately to allow users to edit Full HD video in barely a quarter of the desktop area.

Apple launched its second Retina-equipped laptop, the MacBook Pro 13in with a 2,560 x 1,600 display, last month.
