For the first time in 25 years, Microsoft has issued a new company logo to usher in the Windows 8 era.
Made up of a newly square Windows symbol alongside grey Microsoft logo type, it's been designed to closely match the logos for other products in Microsoft's portfolio, including Office and Xbox.
Click here to read our full review of Windows 8.
"From Windows 8 to Windows Phone 8 to Xbox services to the next version of Office, you will see a common look and feel across these products providing a familiar and seamless experience on PCs, phones, tablets and TVs," said Jeff Hansen, General Manager of Brand Strategy.
"This wave of new releases is not only a reimagining of our most popular products, but also represents a new era for Microsoft, so our logo should evolve to visually accentuate this new beginning."
The logo takes pride of place on Microsoft.com from today, and will be used in Microsoft's retail stores and on all future TV ads.
Hmmm...
I wonder how long it'll be before Lego joins the ranks of those suing successful tech companies?

The first thing it reminds me of is the old soft drink Quatro. It's the 4 squares that do it

It must have took around 5 minutes in paint to come up with that design. Not that it's bad in any way it just looks a bit simple.

I can't help but think of windows 3.11 for some reason.

Really.

Does my monitor need calibrating again...
or do those four colours in the panes look curiously sickly?

Tweet by a co-worker: New @Microsoft logo looks like it was designed in Paint by someone in HR.

Did the run an competition for pre-school children and this won?
Seriously hope they didn't pay someone to come up with this.
To anyone who didn't know you would think this new one was the 25 year old version.

Artistic
Pointillism on the microscopic scale.
Magnified a billion times, this proves Lebesgue integration and Fourier differences.
Hi Microsoft... give me a little wave please.

One colour is almost but not quite red, another almost but not quite green, followed by an almost but not quite blue and an almost but not quite yellow.
That should be Microsoft's company motto from now on - Almost but not quite.

New tag line
"We're Microsoft and we're UGLY! [psst, check out our Metro, too :)]"
Maybe ugly is the new black. I am so behind the times.....

come on all you damn MS Haters
You can do better than this wishy washy pointilist sniping.
MS has gone Metro (dont even bother commenting on the name) like it or lump it. Me, I like it, it makes a change from soft rounded semi transparent corners of yore.

Good to see..
..and you certainly can't accuse them of going at Windows 8 half-heartedly. So often companies get accuesd of doing too little too late in the face of a challenge from a rival. Well, it might be a bit late but you certainly can't accuse them of doing too little. But maybe I'm biased as I'll be queueing (?) ok, queueing may not be necessary, but I'll be buying it on launch day for my home PCs.

The logo change doesn't bother me
but I know who will be jumping up and down with joy. Software pirates. Each time a company simplifies a logo like this it plays into their hands. So now they have nice plain logos for windows and Microsoft, very simple designs on packaging to recreate. instead of spending hours on it it will take minutes

I remember quatro. wouldn't mind one of them right now lol

Bland is inadequate...
I'm not over-impressed, but hey, it's only a Logo, I'm only a punter.
Mostly it's 'invisible' 'til someone points it out....

Well, it can't hurt
I guess...

Simplified
Designing something to be simple doesn't always make it good.

Clearly designed to avoid a lawsuit.

Looks familiar
Blue, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Red. New Microsoft? No, Google. When Google buys them, at least the colours will match.

So 1960's
I bet they didn't even offer to pay the pet monkey that painted it.
