SuSE announces desktop Office product that lets users take advantage of familiar MS Office apps in Linux.

At LinuxWorldExpo in New York, SuSE has announced the availability of its Linux Office Desktop product.

The software contains not only Sun Microsystem's StarOffice 6.0, but also Codeweaver's CrossOver Office 1.3.1 that give users full compatibility with Microsoft Office apps such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Office 97/2000 as well as Lotus Notes.

Easy migration to Linux is aided by the Acronis OS Selector, which can resize existing Windows NTFS partitions to create room for SuSE Linux.

SuSE has also announced the availability of its Openexchange Server, which the company describes as an 'an innovative all-in-one communication and groupware solution'. As well as mail functions it offers document management, address books, project management, discussion forums and more on a group basis - claiming cost-savings over comparable Microsoft solutions of as much as 63 per cent.

Finally, SuSE Linux Enterpirse Server 8 builds on UnitedLinux 1.0 to offer reliable apps including file, print, web and security services. Because it is based on UnitedLinux, it offers a uniform code basis that SuSE claims can be rolled out across all significant hardware platforms.
