Apple has added a Retina display, faster processor and 4G support to its iPad, confounding pundits by refusing to give it a new name.

Many had expected it to be called the iPad 3 or iPad HD, but CEO Tim Cook merely referred to it as "the new iPad".

The new iPad features a Retina display, first seen on the iPhone 4. At 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, it features 3.1 million pixels - which Cook said was more than an HD TV.

The new A5X chip includes quad-core graphics, which Cook promised was four times faster than the iPad 2, while still offering comparable battery life of ten hours on Wi-Fi and nine hours on 4G. It support HSPA+ (21Mbits/sec) and dual-carrier HSDPA (up to 42Mbits/sec) as well as LTE at speeds of up to 72Mbits/sec - although British users won't be seeing those speeds for quite some time.

The new "iSight" 5-megapixel camera features backside illumination for low-light conditions. It also shoots 1080p video with image stabilisation.

The new iPad doesn't get Apple's Siri assistant, but it does come with a dictation tool, for speaking instead of typing emails and updates for apps such as Twitter.

Apple has also updated its own apps for the Retina screen, and revealed iPhoto for the iPad, with multitouch editing, retouching tools and iCloud-based "Journals" to show off images.

Existing iPad applications will be automatically rescaled for the new high-resolution display, in much the same way they were when the Retina screen was added to the iPhone 4.

The next-gen iPad will be available 16 March, with pre-orders starting today for the US, UK and nine other countries. For Wi-Fi only, the 16GB is £399, 32GB is £499 and 64GB is £549. The iPad 2 will remain on sale, with the price of the Wi-Fi 16GB version cut to £329.

The Apple TV also saw an update, adding 1080p support, content from Netflix and a new interface. The media streamer is also available on 16 March for $99.

Quite pleased

I don't have to sell my iPad 2 for the latest iPad because it's not a big enough upgrade

By TimoGunt on 7 Mar 2012

Ho Hum

Bit of an anti-climax then...

By bronven on 7 Mar 2012

So iPad2s then?

.

By daveandrews1 on 7 Mar 2012

It's amazing, it's magical,

it "redefined once again the category", it's... an iPad 2 with higher resolution screen. Whoopee doo.

Thank god the media haven't been suckered into all this.. oh no, what's that on the BBC news front page?

Errors in prices

According to the Apple UK website, the prices are different to what you have quoted:
Wifi only -
16GB = £399
32GB = £479*
64GB = £559*
(* different prices)

Wifi + 4G -
16GB = £499
32GB = £579
64GB = £659

Backside illumination?

Is that because someone died recently? Some luminary or other...?

Marginally heavier, marginally thicker, and improvements only to those features I don't use mean I most likely won't be getting an iPad 3. It is very hard to improve on perfection though. Only new feature I am interested in is dictate to text.

Really Magical!

First a lousy upgrade to the iPhone4, now a lousy upgrade to the iPad (No change of name to iPad 3 because it is the same as the iPad 2 with a higher resolution screen, get it?)Like releasing the same old PC with a new monitor - really magical!

Negative reviews

Considering it is the same price for a fantastic resolution increase and processor and camera upgrade what do people expect. The name incidentally is New IPad Generation 3 to be exact so why are people so concerned about that.

By tellboy86 on 8 Mar 2012

Minor upgrades...

..make more money than major updates.

No expensive research, no risk, rinse and repeat.

Apple are just another cash-cow milking corporation. The innovation has gone.

They make good, but overpriced products.

The iPad has no appeal to me. I have an iPhone which does it's job well as a smartphone.

General disappointment

Apple have a history of saying nothing in public about a new device whilst winding up the rumour mill in the backgroud to generate hype. It worked when Apple would then exceed expectations. With both the iPhone4s and the "New" iPad Apple have met expectations exactly and this seems to have lead to the disappointment. Everything in the new iPad was predicted months in advance - apart from the increase in weight and thickness - so people are a bit underwhelmed.

@tellyboy

"The name incidentally is New IPad Generation 3 to be exact so why are people so concerned about that."

I doubt that anyone with any intelligence is in the least concerned.

It's just quite amusing watching the fanbois wetting themselves over nothing.

Perhaps...

...about as entertaining as watching the flame-boys taking every opportunity to infer as to their superiority by not being taken in and following the apple 'herd'?

By lokash20 on 8 Mar 2012

Focussed on new customers

Perhaps Apple is focussing on getting new owners and increasing its market share, rather than upgraders this time around?

I don't have an iPad but have been holding off on the basis the new one would have a high-res screen. Maybe...

What would have been a revolutionary, rather than evolutionary, upgrade?

By halsteadk on 8 Mar 2012

If it were a PC

And the latest model had 25% more processing power, twice the graphics performance and a fantastic screen - all for the same price s last years model -it would get very favourable reviews.
Apple have a docking station and keyboard to use it as a netbook, the Apple TV box allows you to mirror the screen on a HD television. Other than the walled garden, what is there not to like?

I agree with @tellboy86

I have an iPad2 and would kill for one of these. A retina display and better camera were the only things I felt the iPad2 were missing. Siri, in my opinion, is much better suited to an iPhone, and most of the people I know that have a 4S don't tend to use it a great deal after the novelty of it wears off.

I don't know why everyone is so downbeat, especially given that nobody seems to be naming what they think should have been included in the new package (that isn't already there). Agreeing with tellboy, it's not like Apple are charging more money - unit for unit, the new iPad costs what the iPad2 did - a fantastic deal in my opinion. This is the price that Apple pay for getting the iPad2 so right that they only needed to make an evolutionary update for the next version.

I should note that I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 mobile phone that I am very happy with, just in case I get accused of being an Apple fanboi. I just believe that credit should be given where it's due, and imo, the iPad is the best tablet platform out there. This isn't merely because of technical specs/battery life etc.. it has the better designed and supported eco system and applications. Where apps are concerned the lack of fragmentation means the developers can concentrate on producing quality apps rather than having to worry about catering for the umpteen vendor-customised Android variations that their app will need to work on.

By alvin on 8 Mar 2012

Oh yes.. and Quad Core!

Thanks @milliganp

By alvin on 8 Mar 2012

"WELCOME TO THE FUTURE!!!"

...3.1 Megapixel Screen, Quad-core graphics Processor, 72mbps LTE support, 1080p 5Megapixel camera... the foregoing encapsulates a befitting 'ELEGY' to the good old PC!
One last request, Mr Tim Cook:-'A CROSS-EYE 3D SCREEN with 120 HZ REFRESH RATE!'
