Apple was the only top five computing firm in the US to post a gain in sales last year - with one in five dollars spent on consumer electronics going on a device from the iPad maker.

According to statistics from analysts NPD Group, Apple posted a 36% sales growth, taking 19% of sales dollars on electronics in the US.

HP slid 3% and Samsung fell 6%, while Sony and Dell posted even worse sales, losing 21% and 17% respectively.

The results echoed the UK and European markets, where Apple was the only PC firm to post a gain.

PCs continued to dominate the US consumer electronic market, with a fifth of total sales. While computer sales were down 3% - a much stronger result than the UK's 20% dive last quarter - revenue was still $28 billion.

Tablets and ebook readers saw the most growth, with sales doubling to $15 billion, grabbing nearly 11% of the electronics market by revenue.

Rounding out the top five, TVs slid slightly to 14% of total revenue for the market, while tablets grabbed 11%, mobile phones were flat at 8.5% and gaming consoles slipped to 6%.

"US hardware sales growth is becoming harder and harder to achieve at the broad industry level," said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. "Sales outside of the top five categories fell 8% as consumers shifted to a narrow range of products.

"And so it begins.....
The long and painful decline of Apple mk. II."

Obsessive or what?

.
To remember a post from nearly four months ago and wait for a chance to quote it back reeks of OCD and similar mental health problems.

Seek help. ;)

Gosh, are you a psychiatrist as well as a sad wee nerd? Multi-talented!

Rolls on floor laughing at QPW2012

.
Well, I'm not the one squireling away quotes from months back waiting for a chance to make a comeback and I'm not the making a weak but blatant attempt to pass myself off as another poster.

Joining you in gleeful laughter, qpw3141

Well, amid the cesspool of banal and fatuous trollery that normally vomit forth from his and your keyboards, that particular remark was too hilarious to not 'squirrel away' for future titters - a crying shame to waste it, no?
And who, dear qpw3141, would you suggest that I am weakly and blatantly passing myself off for? I fancy another laugh...

IBMcompatiblePC Pro

Catchy isn't it?

If there were no Apple stories these comments sections would be much less entertaining.

Tut tut

An admin needs to deal with the "QPW2012" posts. Being too cowardly to post under your own username is as craven and unprofessional as an applefan gets.

@dubiou
With puerile posts from the likes of "QPW2012" this site is in danger of becoming IBMcompatiblePC Amateur
