States continue Microsoft battle

Two US states have decided to appeal the US District Court of Columbia's recent ruling on nine states' attempt to have stiff penalties imposed on Microsoft for its anti-competitive behaviour.

Many commentators felt that Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's ruling was unduly favourable to Microsoft. Although the states may have been inclined to continue the fight, financial constraints are believed to have deterred them.

As it is, both Massachusetts and West Virginia will be claiming $2.3 million in fees and expenses connected with the lawsuit, which dates back to 1988.

Last week the Washington Post reported that Microsoft offered cover the expenses of those states that did not appeal and provide funds to help enforce Kollar-Kotelly's settlement.
