Samsung has revealed its Galaxy Tab, one of many tablets set to be unveiled this week.

Samsung said the tablet would arrive in Europe in mid-September, followed by Asia and the US in the coming months. Vodafone said it would start selling the tablet in the UK in October, but couldn't specify which date or pricing. The tablet will be available via operators, too.

The 7in tablet has a 1024 x 600 display, 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, and two cameras - a 3megapixel one on the back and a 1.3megapixel on the front for video calling.

It features up to 32GB built-in memory, with a SD slot offering an additional 32GB. Samsung promised seven hours of battery life when playing video.

As it runs Google Android - the latest 2.2 Froyo edition - the Tab offers access to the Android Market for apps, and comes preloaded with Thinkfree Office and typing aid Swype. It also supports Adobe Flash 10.1.

Samsung is also touting a new feature it's calling augmented reality, which lets users navigate more easily and see information about their surroundings.

The Galaxy Tab is just one of the many tablets set to be unveiled at the IFA show in Berlin this week, following the success of Apple's iPad. Many of the devices will run Google's Android, which many see as a more open alternative to Apple's iOS, which infamously doesn't run Adobe's Flash.

"Samsung recognises the tremendous growth potential in this newly created market and we believe that the Samsung Galaxy Tab brings a unique and open proposition to market," said JK Shin, President of mobile communications at Samsung.

“The Samsung Galaxy Tab has been designed to enable consumers to maximise their online experience wherever that may be.”

As with all of these tablet devices I don't understand the need for such a big bezel round the screen, they make the whole thing 2 inches bigger than it should be considering the size of the screen.

Nice

Well, what really stunned me is 'While the iPad has no camera, the Galaxy Tab has two -- including a front-facing camera for video conferencing. It's also a phone.' So awesome!
Hmm, just considering to buy one or not, as Im also really happy with my fantastic iPad, For work, the iPad does almost all of the things an average user needs, and with a much much nicer U/I. Easy of use, fast, and efficient. For entertainment, now with one of the top features of iPad --- movie watching, Im totally sucked in enjoying kinds of videos and movies with iPad, though some times need in the help of iPad video converter from iFunia for lack of flash support. Ugggggg!!!!

@Phoomeister
How are you supposed to hold a touch screen device if it doesn't have a non-touch area around the edge? The glass and aluminium iPad is both quite heavy and slippery, so you need to be able to grip it.

The Galaxy Tab is nice, but both the hardware and some of the apps are an obvious clone of the iPad. A bit more innovation would have been nice.

Phoomeister is right.I have thought this for a while.How about they bring the screen to the edge of the unit and apply a 2" wide clear coating to the perimeter to isolate fingers from the touch functions of the screen.Simples!

Early prices for the Samsung Galaxy Tablet are $900 and higher, making a subsidised tie-in with a telco essential if prices are even to equal the iPads. Then of course, the data download costs will have to be much higher, so the iPad will win on cost there.
