Nikon has announced the successor to its popular D3000 digital SLR camera, the modestly named D3100.

The D3100 raises the resolution from 10.2 to 14.2 megapixels; introduces a Live View mode; and gains the ability to shoot Full HD video in H.264 format at 24 frames per second (rising to 30 fps at 720p resolution).

It’s also smaller and lighter than the older model, and boasts an extended ISO range up to 6400 and an improved Guide Mode to help beginners take successful shots.

The D3100 will launch with an RRP of £499.99 for the body alone, or £579.99 with an 18-55mm kit lens. For comparison, the D3000 launched at £409.99 last July, but can now be found online for around £330.

New Coolpix compact brings brighter projector

Nikon also unveiled a new compact with built-in projector. The Coolpix S1100pj is an evolutionary development of the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj, boosting the power of the projector from 10 to 14 lumens.

This brighter bulb improves the throw distance as well. Nikon claims the new model can project from a distance of 2.4m, offering an image measuring 3ft 11in across the diagonal.

Most interestingly, the new camera can also be used as a PC display, turning it into a fully functional pico-projector.

The S1100pj will launch with an RRP of £349.99, £50 less than the original S1000pj.

Nikon D3000 pricing

Worth pointing out that the £330ish price for the D3000 also includes the 18-55mm lens (on Amazon) so compares to the £580 figure. Either the prices are way off, or the D3100 is going to have to be way better than even the D5000.

New superzoom lens too

They also announced a new 55-300mm "consumer" lens, replacement for the older model.

Or at least it was in the copy of the press release which I got, which was very similar to this article :)

@halsteadk

Amazon != RRP.

We are talking about the manufacturers recommended retail price here, not the price from a discount store. ;-)

Amazon are not

a discount store. They are a major online retailer. :-)

Your point is valid beyond the bounds which you apply; RRP != /any/ retail price after a month or two.
