Intel is planning to launch a consumer-targeted small form factor SSD, according to a leaked roadmap of the company's plans for the storage devices.

Codenamed “Soda Creek”, the new 80GB and 40GB drives are expected to be available from the end of this year, according to a document leaked on a French Mac site.

As yet there are no details on the dimensions of the devices, but they will be built using a 34nm process.

If genuine, Intel's roadmap shows that the devices are PCIe full SATA SSDs, which could potentially feature in smartphones and other portable devices.

Also due to arrive later in the year is a capacity boost for Intel's X25-M range of 2.5in SATA SSDs.

Currently restricted to 80GB and 160GB models, Intel plans to launch in Q4 three new models based on a 25nm production process, with capacities of 160GB, 300GB and 600GB.

mSATA might be a clue?

As well as the designation PCIe the Soda Creek drive is also called mSATA in the diagram. This is a form factor defined by Sandisk. It does seem to be OEM focussed rather than a consumer product.

"Note to self -get a life!"

lol, at least your a good mind reader (-;

Seems to be a decent option for iPods, netbooks etc. I'd have thought it would be too expensive to implement in staphones though, especially as SD and microSD cards are cheap.
