HTC switches to "Super LCDs" in smartphones

HTC will start using "Super LCDs" in its flagship phones after being hit by supplier shortages of OLEDs.

The Desire and Nexus One will feature SLCDs from this summer, HTC said, attributing the switch to high demand for phones with 3.7in displays.

Super LCD appears to be little more than marketing hype for the IPS screen technology found in devices such as the iPhone 4.

It is difficult for most people to tell any meaningful difference

"The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said HTC chief executive Peter Chou.

HTC said the SLCD displays are brighter than existing LCDs, feature in-plane switching for a wider viewing angle, and offer five times better power management than conventional LCD panels.

HTC claims customers will hardly notice the switch in technology. “Both SLCD and AMOLED display technologies offer incredible viewing experiences and it is difficult for most people to tell any meaningful difference,” a spokesperson told PC Pro.

HTC will continue using AMOLED displays alongside the new SLCDs, offering the Desire and Nexus One with both displays, but has yet to explain how it will notify customers of the difference.

I guess some markets will get the SLCD and others will get the OLED. Expect us to get the SLCD - the cheaper cost (to them) will help offset the low value of Sterling.
