Amazon says it plans to launch a free Kindle app for Android phones that will allow bookworms to download and read eBooks without buying a Kindle device.
The application will include standard Kindle features, such as synchronisation with other devices and provision for notes and bookmarks.
The Android app won't be the first time Kindle has been available on smartphones – Apple's iPhone can already display Kindle books - but Amazon says consumers will be able to buy books directly from the app, which is impossible on the iPhone.
According to Amazon, the app will give readers access to 500,000 titles (although the UK may get a smaller catalogue than US counterparts), but newspapers and magazines will initially remain off the reading list.
There is no launch date for the app, but Amazon says it is “coming soon” and consumers can register for release notification.
From around the web
Finally Kindle for Android has been confirmed. It's been a rumor for a while, and being an Android fan, I am pleased to finally hear that Kindle will be available on Android. Amazon currently offers Kindle for iPhone, but I'm just not a massive iPhone enthusiast. When I use Kindle I have to use it on my computer and occasionally transporting my laptop with me isn't really one of the most suitable circumstance. However, my phone is almost constantly on me, and it is likely to be such a relief to be able to continue my reading no matter where I'm going.
