Clegg: Digital Economy Bill was a "stitch-up"

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has described the passing of the Digital Economy Bill as a "stitch-up".
Clegg made the comments in a video reply delivered to The YouTube & Facebook Digital Debate, in which each of the party leaders deliver responses to questions posed by the public.
The Digital Economy Bill was controversially hurried through the Commons in the so-called "wash-up" that follows the calling of a General Election.
Clegg claims the way the bill was rushed through without proper debate is a "classic example of what's wrong with Westminster".
"It was rammed through after the election was called in the last dying days of the Parliament in something called a 'wash-up'," said Clegg. "It wasn't a wash-up, it was a stitch-up. A stitch-up between Labour and Conservative MPs who decided that you didn't deserve to have your representatives in Parliament properly looking at a bill which might have a very, very serious impact on the way that you use the internet."
"That's why we said it should have been scrutinised properly, it shouldn't have been rushed through in that way in the first place, at all."
All of the 29 Liberal Democrat MPs who voted on the Digital Economy Bill voted against its passing, but they were defeated by an overwhelming majority of 189 ayes to 47 no votes. Clegg himself didn't vote.

His Master's Voice
That's Lord Mandy in Corfu on August 7 2009, taking his orders on a Rothschild yacht.
How does that song go now? "Just who's pulling the strings
I'm all tied up to you
But where's it leading me to?"
"Like a puppet on a..... string"

eh?
If he didn't vote how can he expect us to listen to his opinions?
If you don't vote you don't get to have an opinion. Is that not what we are always told about using our vote?

After my own disgust with this bill I emailed my MP and got a response. His response didn't address the primary issue - that of corruption - but if we keep hitting them over the head demanding that this bill be revoked it may very well be.

I emailed Anne Widdecome and got a "Dear John"
She was too busy having her farewell party to give a stuff.
I'm now emailing her possible replacements...

Me too
I e-mailed Mark Oaten, but again the MP couldn't give a stuff as he was stepping down at the election.

29 Liberal Democrat MPs
I think it is admirable that Nick Clegg is voicing an opinion that we were all thinking.
However, if he is that passionate about how much of a stitch up it was, why didn't he and ALL of the Lib Dem MPs vote against?
By mystic_dan on 30 Apr 2010 ![]()
@mystic_dan
For the same reason that most people don't vote Lib Dem.

This is funny the liberals helped to write that bill.
I'm of the opinion the Tories will probably scrap it, that's what I hope anyway..

Your labouring under the misapprehension that voting will actually make any sort of difference other than possibly change the name of the company that ends up in government.

An uncontrolled source of information and communication must scare our current 'Dictatorship' silly!!! The Digital Economy Bill has about as much to do with illegal downloads as Anti Terrorism legislation has to do with Terrorism. They are both means to control and snoop on the population of Britain. Big Brother has been in charge since 1997 when the Labour Party sold it's soul to Rothschild!!!

A bit late after the event
I hope he sees the error of his ways in not voting on this bill and makes a concerted stand against the introduction of this flawed, iniquitous and intrusive bill framed advantageously towards big media magnates of Mandy and Dave’s who will call their chips in after the election.

MPs voting record
Do bear in mind that sometimes MPs make deals with their opposite numbers on voting. So an MP who needs to be away from the house during the debate seeks out another MP who would vote the opposite way (and may also need to be away from the house) and the two both agree not to vote.
However, I do think it is out of order for MPs who have not attended the debate to turn up at the end and vote.
