Microsoft has brought Windows 7's automatic diagnostics system to XP and Vista via a free download.

The Fix It Centre claims to find and repair common problems on PCs and is currently available in beta form. It also attempts to pre-empt problems by scanning for and installing driver updates for the PC or any devices linked to it.

Fix It gives the choice of automatically fixing faults or providing a report to the user, with details of each issue and the choice to fix each individually.

For advanced troubleshooting, it keeps a record of all the system’s hardware and software to provide a more detailed explanation of problems when dealing with Microsoft’s support staff. Fix It automatically adds a full list of devices and previous fixes to the fault report sent to technicians.

Users of XP must have SP3 installed to access Fix It, while users of XP Pro (64-bit) need SP2 installed. It is also available across Windows Server 2003 and 2008.

The Fix It beta can be downloaded here.

I tried to download the Fix It beta and got nasty error messages towards the end of the process. Result: Sweet FA.

Conclusion: BEWARE!
