Microsoft has finally unveiled details of a free upgrade scheme for Office 2010.
The technology guarantee scheme will ensure that people who buy Office 2007 over the next few months will qualify for a free upgrade to the corresponding version of Office 2010.
Unlike in previous years, where Microsoft has run the scheme through retail partners, the company has decided to base this scheme on Office 2007 activations.
Anyone who buys Office 2007 - either as separate software or pre-installed on a new PC - will qualify for a free download of Office 2010, if they activate the software between 5 March and 30 September.
There are certain exclusions from the free upgrade offer, such as students and teachers who buy the software at a discount through Microsoft's education scheme. People who buy second-hand licences via eBay are also specifically excluded.
As Microsoft has reshuffled the product line-up, Office 2007 users might not get exactly the same applications in the upgrade as they currently enjoy, with Microsoft providing full details in its Technology Guarantee FAQ.
Those on slow internet connections will be able to order upgrade DVDs for a fee, although Microsoft UK was unable to confirm how much that fee was at the time of publication.

Where's the best price for Small business edition
I already have 2007 office pro but want to save on the £430 MS are charging for the 2010 version. Best I can find is Amazon for £187...

Why the rush?
Given that 2007 added very little for the user, except the need to learn a whole new way of working, why the rush to go for 2010?
Surely most people wait until there is a wider user market and MS have issued at least the first major bug fixes?
Can '10 handle multiple numbering sequences? How about two languages in the one document each having its own set of figure numbers, etc?
There was so much Word really needed and new look was not high on my list.
