RIM has released a free version of its Enterprise Server software aimed at small and medium-sized businesses.

BlackBerry Express Server will sync BlackBerry phones to Microsoft Exchange or Windows Small Business servers, allowing employees to securely access their email, calendar, contacts, notes and tasks.

The software will also allow BlackBerry users to edit Office documents, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint presentations, and access files and software stored behind the company firewall.

According to RIM, BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express will be compatible with Microsoft Exchange 2003 and upwards, as well as Windows Small Business Server 2003 and 2008. The software will be released in March.

Alongside the release of BlackBerry Express Server, RIM has also demonstrated a new WebKit browser for its smartphones, intended to close the performance and feature gap on Android and iPhones.

Finally...!

The cost of BES was the single thing preventing me from putting Blackberry devices out to my users when Exchange and WinMo provided similar functionality at no extra cost. Pity it's come too late for me as I've had to go with yet another set of dismal WinMo devices on a 2 year contract.
