Vodafone has revealed it will start selling the Apple iPhone from 14 January - but those hoping for New Year bargains will be disappointed.

The cheapest iPhone 3GS package available is £30 per month on a two-year contract, but you'll still have to pay out £149 for even the lowest-end version of the phone.

There are 18-month contracts starting from £40 a month, which offers the iPhone 3G 8GB handset for free, but charges £89 for the iPhone 3GS 16GB and £179 for the 3GS 32GB. All of the plans come with 1GB of mobile data and Wi-Fi access.

Tesco is offering a £20, 12-month contract, although even the lowest end model will cost £222.

Vodafone is also making the iPhone available on business contracts.

“We’re especially pleased to offer iPhone to business customers from launch, both directly and through a network of 20 dealers across the country – clearly demonstrating that Vodafone is the natural home for small business,” Vodafone chief executive Guy Laurence said in a statement.

The operator is cushioning the blow of missing out on Christmas by giving free calls to customers who've already registered an interest in the iPhone, letting them call other Vodafone customers for free for the length of their contract.

I was more interested in the HTC HD2

I had to complain several times for Vodafone to let me have an HD2. Despite massive demand they seem to have decided it was a "business phone" and stopped selling it to the general consumer.

Not until I asked for the code to transfer my number would they help me out.

No incentive to buy

Apple have pretty much put the kibosh on any healthy competition.

How very Microsoft of them.
