Microsoft to watch over itself

Microsoft has proposed that one of its ex-employees be appointed to the three-man team with the task of ensuring the software giant upholds the mandates of the antitrust settlement.

Recommendations from both Microsoft and the Justice Department were made yesterday with Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly.

Fite was working at Microsoft as recently as 2000, where he headed up the development of the Windows CE platform. He holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering from Stanford.

The Justice Department, along with the nine states that originally agreed the settlement, have recommended the appointment of Harry Saal to the committee. Saal founded the Network General, which merged with McAfee Associates and is now known as Network Associates. He holds a Ph.D. in High Energy Physics from Columbia University.

If Kollar-Kotelly approves the choices, then Fite and Saal would together pick the third member of the team.
