Sky Player shows up in Windows 7

The Sky Player software has arrived in Windows 7's Media Center, providing live and on-demand television services.
The Sky Player was the surprise announcement of Windows 7 launch day back in October, and has taken over a month to arrive in the Media Center software.
The interface will be instantly familiar to owners of the Xbox 360 console, who've had access to the Sky Player for the past few weeks.
Existing Sky customers can take advantage of the library of on-demand video, allowing them to catch-up on channels that are included in their subscription package. Customers with multiroom or Sky's premium broadband service can also watch live channels through the Windows 7 Media Center.
Non-Sky customers will have to dip into their pockets and choose from one of the myriad subscription schemes if they wish to use the software.
Picture quality
The Windows 7 Sky Player worked smoothly in our brief tests. Streams started within only a couple of seconds on our (admittedly fast) office connection, although the picture quality is sub-TV standard, with fast-moving football suffering particularly badly. There are no HD streaming/downloading options, as with the BBC iPlayer.
Oddly, the picture quality on the live channels, such as Sky News, seemed higher than the on-demand content.
The menus are smartly designed, with content categorised by both genre and channel. As with the regular Media Center, a small in-vision window in the bottom left of the screen shows you what's currently playing.
There is no option to download the programmes in the Sky Player, meaning users will have to be within range of a decent broadband to benefit.

annoying, you have to sign everytime you open it up.

Free trial?
Can't help feeling it would be in Sky's interests to offer a free trial or make a rotating channel free each month. At £15/month who's going to sign up without knowing what they're getting?

Free trial?!?
I think you're making the maistake of using the words 'free' and 'Sky' in the same sentence.
This service is really aimed at Sky existing subscribers.

Good
I've just set this up - I'm very impressed at the quality (even at low settings)and channels, even as a Sky subscriber. Gives me more options, when wife is watching Drama/Murder mysteries and daughter's hogging Disney channel on multi-room set when I want to watch footie!
My broadband connection tops out at just over 2meg, and it's very usable.
Not worried about logging in every time - how much time does that take?

Right, but...
I don't subscribe to Sky, so how do I remove this junk. Microsoft should provide a means to remove this 'advertising'. If Sky wishes to advertise on my screen, it can negotiate payment with ME, and I will set the price for that.
For anyone who wants to get rid of it, get this program, which lets you really customise Media Center - http://adventmediacenter.com/

Oh... and
Oh. By the way, I'm not affiliated with the site, and it's free anyway. Seems a good little program for customising the appearance of media center.
If you want to get rid of the channels in Guide, just use the info button and go to settings. Then choose to edit channels and uncheck the sky ones.
Congratulations, you are now free of this unwanted and hopeless advertising. And if anyone from Sky is listening, I won't buy anything from you in future after this - putting your icons into my PC amounts to vandalism in my eyes. And I don't reward vandals.

Agreed andyr300 , the constant signing in part is very very annoying. What's the point of having a remote with MCE if you then have to keep getting up to put your password in on your keyboard? Surely this could be addressed? (Holds breath)

no sign ...
Sky player does not appear in media centre for me. Is there anything I need to do to get it to appear? Do I need to download anything?

Pricing gulf compared to their iPhone app...
It beats me how on earth Sky think I might be willing to pay £43 a month for all the Sports channels on my PC, when I can get them all just as legitimately on my iPod for only £6!
By jonpauldrake on 26 Nov 2009
Free - Nope !!!
Sign up for free but then you need to spend an extra £5 a month to watch on your computer even although you are paying £40 for SKY. AND whoops if you want to watch an already broadcast episode that will be £1.47. Want to watch a film - that will be .............. Sports - if it ain't just the highlights from last week them..// And if you want todays rather than yesterdays BBC news then.... Normal SKY.
