Spotify arrives on Symbian

Spotify

Posted on 23 Nov 2009 at 10:44

Spotify has launched a mobile app for Symbian, vastly expanding the streaming music service's reach on smartphones.

Spotify launched iPhone and Android apps earlier this year, although unlike the "freemium" PC software, users had to pay a £10-per-month Premium subscription to stream music to their smartphone.

Now the company has added Symbian, the world's most widely-used smartphone OS, to the line-up. Not every S60 device is supported, however, with Spotify's official list of supported Symbian devices stretching to 25 separate models, all but three of which are manufactured by Nokia.

Symbian users will also have to pay for a premium subscription to access the service.

The addition of Symbian leaves Windows Mobile and BlackBerry OS as the only two major smartphone players not to have a Spotify app.

Spotify continues to admit new members to the service on an invite-only basis, after the increased demand following the iPhone/Android launch placed heavy demand on the company's servers. Paying customers are admitted immediately.
