Intel warns of processor drought

Processor

Posted on 18 Nov 2009 at 08:47

Intel's chief executive has warned that the predicted demand for PCs next year could outstrip supply of components, including processors.

According to figures from IDC, demand for PCs is set to grow from 12% to 18% in 2010, as consumers and businesses look to upgrade their hardware following the global recession.

However, Intel chief executive Paul Ottelini has warned that manufacturing cutbacks made by companies to deal with reduced consumer spending could make it difficult to meet expected demand.

"The industry is not ready for this yet," says Otellini. "One of the things I worry about is, will everybody's capacity be there in sufficient quantities to build it?"

The warning follows similar claims by Seagate chief executive Stephen Luczo, who claimed there could be shortages of hard disk drives next year if conditions keep improving.

Opportunity for AMD?

I'm sure AMD (for PCs) and Snapdragon (for netbooks) can help out in the event of a shortage of Intel parts.

Sounds almost like they are trying to encourage people to get components for christmas... I hope I don't open my stocking to find a processor sitting in it... unless its an i7

demand for PCs is set to grow from 12% to 18% in 2010

and this means what? 12% annual growth? 12% of the world's population?

@PhantomBudgie

I think you'll find that it means...

For every 100 processors sold in 2009, it is estimated that 112 to 118 will be sold in 2010.

Clever Marketing?

I know that the world of Just in Time manufacturing means keeping low stocks, but I really can't see this as anything but a ploy to get companies, businesses and consumers to "get 'em early before it runs out!"

I have to agree with Khellan - it really is all about clever marketing - seasonal time, end of year budgets too. Also Win7 released at this time and people want a new part for this or that and hey its christmas in a few weeks - so hurry up and buy before you lose out.
