Nokia's started shipping the long-awaited N900 and Vodafone looks likely to be offering the phone on a contract soon.
According to Nokia, the phones will be available in UK stores this month, at a price of around £500, although contract details are slowly emerging.
"The Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device pre-orders," says Nokia's José-Luis Martinez.
"What's exciting is the Maemo software, which takes its cues from the desktop computer and offers a full browsing experience.”
The N900 features an ARM Cortex-A8 processor and up to 1GB of application memory, claiming that the computing grunt inside the smartphone means users can keep dozens of application windows open simultaneously on the dashboard with no loss of performance.
The built-in 32GB storage is sufficient to store plenty of DVD-quality video, and can be expanded to 48GB with an external microSD card.
While networks have so far been coy about availability and pricing – with no direct news coming from Vodafone, Orange or the other big players – details have begun to leak out from resellers.
According to Mobile Phones Direct, Nokia's branded retail store partner, the handset will be available on Vodafone from the middle of the month, as a free handset for customers signing up to a £35, 24-month contract.
