Sony Ericsson shows off Andoid handset
Posted on 3 Nov 2009 at 09:57
Sony Ericsson has unveiled its Xperia X10 smartphone - the company's first to run on Google's Android operating system.
The handset will have a 4in touchscreen, use Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor, and come with an 8.1-megapixel camera, media player and Wi-Fi.
Android has gained a foothold this year as handset manufacturers attempt to take on Apple's iPhone, but Sony Ericsson says the handset will not be available until next year for fear of cannibalising sales from existing handsets.
Sony Ericsson's current top model, the Satio, with a 12-megapixel camera, has just gone on sale and the X10's announcement could hurt sales in the run up to Christmas.
βI think some consumers will think about waiting until the first quarter to get their hands on the X10 rather than get a Satio for Christmas,β says Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi. βIt was a difficult call to make, trying not to negatively impact products like the Satio, while at the same time announcing something that will persuade consumers not to go to another brand.β

I've never understood why SE announce their phones so far in advance of when they're available.
It makes no sense to me, and instead of avoiding it, in my opinion actually causes cannibalisatin of their other products:
1) I want/need a new phone now, I like SE. I'm going to get one, and in 3-4 months time when they finally deign to allow us to buy one of these, sod if I'm going to spend more money so soon on a phone.
2) I don't get the phone I want now, and do end up waiting, then I obviously haven't bought their current flagship model.
Unless of course they expect owners of their phones to flip them every 3-4 months.
SE like Nokia have way too many models available which means that they're obviously going to get in each others' way in the market. They should seriously consider streamlining their inventory like HTC or Apple do.

New Phone, New OS, Old Version
I've read in articles that the X10 is to be released with Android 1.6. In all honesty I was very excited about this phone and was 90% sure that it would be my next purchase, but after finding out this little piece of information I'm not so sure. Good work Sony Ericsson!! :$

Re: New Phone, New OS, Old Version
I suspect this is because the of the UI SE have put over the top. Android 2.0 will be freely available for anyone to download and install on their phones very soon, so there is nothing to stop you buying the X10 and sticking Android 2.0 on there. You just won't get the SE extras. And, as an SE X1 owner, I can only see that as a good thing. With SE's extras, the X1 is a terribly device. With them removed and a plain ROM installed, it's wonderful.

Mini USB
Although the SE site says that one of the accesories is a mini-USB charger, is the first in the new agreed charger form?
