Wintel users face iPhone synching problems

Windows 7 users running PCs based on Intel's P55 Express chipset are struggling to make their computers talk to their iPhones, according to subscribers on an Apple forum.

Posts show that although iTunes 9 for Windows running on affected machines recognises the iPhone, the system falls over when the two pieces of hardware attempt to sync, prompting an “error 0xE8000065” message.

TheApple forum highlights the problem affecting multiple configurations and various USB ports.

“There's an issue with the USB drivers and the iPhone,” writes one poster. “I don't know the full details, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with the new power-saving modes for the P55 boards. The easiest fix I've found so far is to just buy a PCI USB card and sync from there.”

However, that solution has not worked for everyone documenting the problem.

A Microsoft spokesperson has told PC Pro the company is looking into the problem to see if it is Windows 7 related, or a problem with iTunes 9, or the Intel P55 Express chipset, the hardware which is a common theme among all posters to the forum.

"We reviewed the issue raised on the discussion board and are currently investigating,” the company says in a statement. “If we determine this to be a problem specific to Windows 7, we will post an update on the Microsoft Answers site."

Intel also says it is investigating the problem, but couldn't give a time frame for a resolution. "There are a number of motherboards from third party vendors involved and we are talking to them and looking into it," Intel spokesperson George Alfs told PC Pro. "One thing we're looking at is a BIOS configuration."

Apple has yet to respond to our requests for an update.
