HTC has confirmed that it will be updating its Hero smartphone with the recently released Android 2 software, codenamed Eclair.

"Yes, we are working on an Eclair update for the HTC Hero," the Taiwanese company confirms in a statement. "Because Eclair is a significantly enhanced release, it will require some time to update Sense for this new version of the Android OS."

Sense is the slick user interface that HTC employs instead of the traditional Android display, and impressed us in our Hero review.

"Please be patient while we work to provide you with a tightly integrated experience like the one you are already enjoying on your Hero," the company concludes.

The Eclair update brings a number of nifty new features to the Android operating system including multitouch, Exchange sync and support for different sized displays.

The update is also important because of Google's decision to bring free turn-by-turn navigation to the mobile operating system.

HTC has not confirmed when it will roll out the update.
