Dell's rugged laptop range has just greeted a new conscript, in the form of the XT2 XFR tablet.

The XT2 XFR weighs a comparatively light 2.4kg, and features a 12.1in 1,280 x 800 capacitive touchscreen - intended to take advantage of Windows 7's multitouch features.

Beneath its armoured exterior, there's a 1.6GHz Intel Core Duo processor, between 1GB and 5GB of DDR3 memory, integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, and the choice of either a solid-state drive (64GB or 128GB) or a 160GB hard disk.

There's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as standard, but customers can also add a mobile broadband connection, GPS and two megapixel webcam if they choose.

The rugged laptop is aimed at anybody working in harsh conditions, including police and emergency workers, and is rated for sand and dust exposure, temperatures between -12 and 60 degrees Celsius, heavy rain and other extreme environmental conditions.

The laptop sits between Dell's fully-rugged Latitude E6400 XFR, which laughs off bullets, and the semi-rugged Latitude E6400. Prices start at £2,271.

It'd be neat if the screen could be detached.
