More than 10% of PCPro.co.uk visitors on Windows 7
Posted on 27 Oct 2009 at 12:04
More than one in ten of the visitors to PCPro.co.uk are already running Windows 7, less than a week after the operating system was officially launched.
Windows 7 passed the 10% barrier for the first time on Friday, the day after the new operating system went on general sale.
Since launch day it's accounted for 11.2% of the visitors to this website, leaving it in third place behind Vista on 21.1% and Windows XP on 46.8%.
The percentage of people using Windows 7 increased significantly over the weekend, when the majority of visitors to the site are using home rather than work PCs. On Saturday and Sunday, it accounted for just shy of 13% of the site's visitors.
PCPro.co.uk naturally attracts a high proportion of early adopters, and so can't be considered representative of the population as a whole. The vast majority of those Windows 7 users will also be running the Release Candidate, and so it awaits to be seen how many will convert to paid-for users when the free trial expires in June 2010.
Nevertheless, the figures are undoubtedly encouraging for Microsoft, which is hoping Windows 7 will help lift it out of a mini financial rut which has seen the company's profits fall for the second consecutive quarter.

Could you publish this once a month?
It would be very interesting to see (a) what the take-up is and (b) what shared of Vista or XP is being replaced.

I think the real story here is that 6.8% of people are still using Windows 95.

Sadly not this geek, who would love to escape Vista, and has a box waiting to installed on his VAIO, if only Sony would cough up an updated driver for his NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT. Whoever put Sony in charge of their NVIDIA drivers needs their head examining.

@peterm2k
I agree, but that figure can't be right, what about Windows 98 and Me? I think its more likely to be Windows 9x users. But even so, it just shows what a battle MS have to bolster security if that proportion of PCPro users (who you would think would be savvy) are still using out-of-date OSes.

Figures are correct
Windows 98 and ME are further down the list. There's still a lot of people clinging to Win 95.

@c6ten
Go to Nvidia's website and download their Windows 7 driver for your gpu or www.laptopvideo2go.com have custom nvidia driver.

Nvidia is the problem
Downloading a Nvidia driver isn't always the answer to a problem. I have downloaded the latest Geforece version for my Windows 7 installation and it just doesn't work properly, as Nvidia admits in answer to complaints on their website forums.
By PeterBlue on 27 Oct 2009
@lavann It was helpful advice, but neither of the compatible drivers will install. NVIDIA have a scanner, and it tells me that Sony are responsible for this particular driver. Considering it took them a year to provide the last update (after NVIDIA released it), I am not hopeful.

I'm shocked that people are still using 95. What is wrong with these people? It would be bad enough if the figure was for 98 and ME, but for 95...!
By Grunthos on 27 Oct 2009
So there are nearly as many Windows 95 users visiting PC Pro as there are Mac Users! That's just bizarre!

Win 95 6.8% - Not Convinced
Call me a doubting Thomas but I just don't believe the Windows 95 figure. I haven't seen a Win 95 PC in the wild for years. Has anybody else seen one recently? What browser would/could they be running?
By rjp2000 on 27 Oct 2009
Ha Ha
More Windows 95 users than Linux and nearly as many as Mac!
That's terrible a 15 year old computer, anyone still using Amiga too.

Well i'm typing this on a sinclair QL ...

I've seen a win 95 pc, though it was a few months backs, I believe the hardware it uses is sufficient for its OS.
I'd be more interested to know if the figures above include the Beta version of Win 7, as this is what I'm currently toying with and will muck about with it up until it dies.
I think I'll run win98 in a virtual machine an access this site too - just for the fun of it!

^^ Maybe the figures could be calculated from the number using win7 RC before the release and then compared to how many 'new' users Win7 users have arrived - to reflect the relevant increase. - Or set up a poll on the site!
(sorry I rushed thru the article initially & had not read it fully)

Obviously this 10% had more sence than to PRE ORDER through Comet
Is it just Comet or the pc industry in general that does not grasp the concept of why customers pre order. whether it's books, films or CD's I have always received my order on the day of release. yet with Windows 7 still no disk, despite ordering it back in July
