Nokia has filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming the US firm has infringed ten Nokia patents.

The patents - filed in the US state of Delaware - relate to technologies fundamental for devices using GSM, UMTS and/or local area network (LAN) standards, Nokia says.

The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the device was introduced in 2007, Nokia claims.

"By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation," Ilkka Rahnasto, vice president for legal and intellectual property at Nokia, says in a statement.

Apple shares briefly dipped as a result of the news.

Hmmm

Interesting that it's only now (some 2+ years since the original iphone hit the market) that Nokia are taking this legal action.

Is it just me or does this almost seem like sour grapes because Apple has battered Nokia's market share?

Nope!

hjlupton last year Nokia held 40% of the market for the first time in its history! hardly a battering, Apple has a long way to go. more likely they have spent the last two years unable to agree on a figure.

Hjlupton, are you a Apple shareholder trying to justify Apple's actions?

Sound more like Nokia have resulted to a lawsuit after a 2 years of failed negotiations with Apple.

If Ilkka Rahnasto is correct. I fully support Nokia.

Eh?

Nokia still completely dominates both the phone and the smartphone markets (not that you'd know so from the press coverage).

It's just standard business practice. You don't bother suing until the product is successful because the awards are per-unit. Besides, Apple have always infringed patents and then settled out of court. I've always found it bizarre but that's just how they do things. And Nokia will get a nice fat settlement because Apple ain't going to risk some judge blocking iPhone sales.

And Apple thought they could get away with this?

iPhone users are gonna hate Nokia for this - that might help the fruit sell more to fruitcakes who believe in their iFruit

But yeah, nuttyness aside, Bassey1976 is perfectly right - I'm sure though M$ and google have possibly broken patents too - or have they?

All Apple have done is develop similar features in the iPhone, it's not like they've stolen the code or hardware from a Nokia phone. Like most stupid patent battles it's over ideas.

One company has an idea and patents it and then act surprised when another company has the same idea and don't pay them vast sums of money just because they thought of it first.
