Toshiba won't ship Windows 7 upgrades until December

Toshiba NB200

Posted on 20 Oct 2009 at 09:28

Toshiba has told customers expecting Windows 7 upgrade discs that they won't be arriving until December.

The PC manufacturer has, like most PC makers, been offering customers who bought a Vista PC in recent months the chance to upgrade to Windows 7. However, unlike most PC manufacturers, Toshiba was charging up to £28 for the privilege, as we exposed in our recent investigation.

The collection of the driver DVD and the programming of an automatic upgrade process require some more time. Therefore, we will be able to ship your Windows 7 Upgrade at the beginning of December

Yet, it appears that relatively steep charge doesn't guarantee swift delivery of the upgrade discs. Despite the fact that Windows 7 will be officially launched this Thursday, Toshiba has warned it will take at least another six weeks to get Windows 7 to its customers.

The revelation comes in an email sent to a PC Pro reader. "Our shipment will contain a Windows 7 DVD, the product key and a free Toshiba driver DVD, containing the latest Windows 7 drivers for your Toshiba PC," the email states.

"The collection of the driver DVD and the programming of an automatic upgrade process require some more time. Therefore, we will be able to ship your Windows 7 Upgrade at the beginning of December. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause."

"Due to technical reasons it is not possible to ship your Windows 7 Upgrade pack without the driver DVD. As soon as the upgrade pack has been shipped, we will inform you straight away by email."

The delay will doubtless disappoint Toshiba customers awaiting the new operating system, not least because Toshiba's own website suggests the discs will arrive promptly. "Upgrade to Windows 7. Why wait?" the site states. "Get ready for Windows 7 tomorrow. Buy a Toshiba laptop today."

Update: 3pm 22 October: A Toshiba spokesman says the company will start sending out Windows 7 upgrade discs at the beginning of November, with only some customers having to wait until December. He couldn't comment on the reason for the delay, but said "there was never any suggestion that it would happen any earlier than November".

I have to question what is so incompatible with a Toshiba laptop that it needs such special treatment. Doesn't make me want to go out and buy one...

This delay is infuiating and the excuse given is ridiculous as this should have been handled much better before hand but I have to comment on the sensationalist way this article has been written.

The charges for the upgrades are hardly a secret, despite being marketed as free the websites clearly state the cost and the reasons for the costs if you bother to read them, a basic skill most people seem to lack these days.

You didn't expose anything in your "recent investigation".

Your article also states "However, unlike most PC manufacturers, Toshiba was charging up to £28 for the priviledge". You cover yourself with the wording but you blatently mean it to come across as though they other manufactuers aren't charging when your linked article clearly shows that they are.

Real reasons?

MS never sent Toshiba an RTM copy? Toshiba never tested the RTM? Over-charging, false advertising, under deliver and being late by so many weeks. Not even small compensention was offered, that gotta hurt.

"Free"

@Relisys

Unfortunately it seems that no-one understands the definition of "free" these days, a bit like few ISPs who use the term "unlimited" actually understand the definition of that word.

They should never have used the word "free" in conjunction with these upgrades if they were planning to charge anything for them. "Free" does NOT mean "0 + admin + shipping".

Toshiba mustn't have Windows 7?

I wrote back to toshiba and said as an IT consultant I don't need their 'SPECIAL' DVD just send me my copy of Windows 7 and Key. Unfortunately they REFUSE to oblige and I need to wait until December at the earliest to receive my copy of Windows 7 Toshiba assured me when I bought the laptop would ship in October.
Toshiba tells lies and obviously doesn't care about their customers once they have purchased.

Toshiba Windows 7 upgrade con

I've been looking forward to getting my Windows 7 upgrade from Toshiba, promised Oct.23rd. My new laptop runs all the Toshiba advertising software and help aids, taking up valuable disk space and extra time to boot, whilst constantly running software in the background that I neither want or need. Could it be that the delayed Toshiba driver DVD needed to upgrade to Windows 7 will contain all the same bumpf that I can't wait to wipe off?The Windows 7 upgrade disk is available, so why else would Toshiba delay shipping? Are they saying that my all singing and dancing laptop can't run the MS upgrade? Very poor!

Better than Samsung

Samsung aren't even allowing you to register for the Windows 7 upgrade until December, with disks likely to arrive around the beginning of February - and they won't even say what they're handling charges are yet!
