Ads watchdog objects to 9.2Ghz PC

AMD X4

Posted on 30 Sep 2009 at 15:19

The Advertising Standards Authority has taken umbrage with an advert for a PC running at 9.2GHz.

The miraculously quick PC was advertised on eBay by a firm called Valatech, and was reported to the ASA by a customer who wondered how such a speed was possible from the AMD Phenom X4 2.3 GHz processor powering the computer.

Valatech's responded that it believed "that overall clock speeds could be calculated based on the combined power of individual cores and that four 2.3 GHz cores resulted in a combined speed of 9.2 GHz.

"The company further claimed to have requested clarification on the matter from Intel and AMD Marketing but did not supply this information."

Odd that.

The ASA wasn't buying the defence though, and ruled that the Valatech ad was likely to mislead customers into believing it was selling a 9.2Ghz PC.

The befuddled company has been ordered not to run the ad again.

Oh dear!

"Valatech's responded that it believed 'that overall clock speeds could be calculated based on the combined power of individual cores and that four 2.3 GHz cores resulted in a combined speed of 9.2 GHz.'"

So that means I've got a 12.8 GHz PC. Whoo-hoo.

Makes me feel slightly better over the amount that it cost me.

maybe they shouldn't be building computers if that's their understanding of how to calculate clock speed

Which is it to be...

Either deliberately misleading or woefully incompetent to build a computer. Any other suggestions?

Still doing it

There's one on eBay today by the same company. A 4GHz PC. Its actually a 2GHz Intel Exxx CPU. They should not be allowed to do this. Maybe I should point out the 'motorway' to them. If 4 lanes of cars are travelling at 70mph the speed isnt 280mph. Its simply 4 lanes of 70mph.

Go to their Ebay listings for CPUs and you get several entries like: "INTEL CORE i7 870 - 11.72 GHz QUAD CORE PROCESSOR"

Rubbish

Anyone who believes that they can achieve 9.2 Ghz from a CPU should stop licking the windows and go get dressed...foolish!

Hmmm Partialy true....

pveater you must be useless in maths and in physics!!!!!
The example with the cars......
Let's say that one lane of cars traveling at 70mph allows 100 cars to go pass point "A" every minute. If we have 4 lanes of cars at 70mph....how many cars would be going trough point "A" every minute.
The answer is of course 400 cars, which is equal to one lane of cars traveling at 280mph.
Now with the processors...Its all about processing power/capability!!
ie. how many calculations per second they can make.
*In theory* a 2ghz dual core processor should have the same processing power as a 4ghz single core or twice the power of a 2ghz single core. In reality it is only 70% faster than the 2ghz single core...so comparable to a 3.4ghz single core.
I'm not making it up...read this.
