Samsung Application Store arrives in UK

Samsung has launched its online app store in the UK, as it looks to cash in on the runaway success of Apple's pioneering iTunes Apps Store.

The service is initially available to owners of Samsung's Omnia and I8910 HD devices, who will need to download a software update to get going.

Once done they'll be given access to around 300 paid-for and free applications, broken down into categories including games, reference, social networking, eBooks and health-related tools.

Given that the iTunes Apps Store is currently populated with 65,000 apps, Samsung's 300 seems a little meagre in comparison. However, the company has enlisted some big names including Electronic Arts and Capcom and is predicting that number will reach 2,000 by the end of 2009.

By that time, the company also plans to have introduced support for the Omnia II and OmniaLITE smartphones, broadening the customer base and hopefully spurring further interest from developers.
